Dear ISA members and other sauna people

Some visitors even visited the Smokesauna Village in Jämsä where sauna Virpiö had been heated for the visitors.
During that visit the Japanese Sauna Association was signing the Godfather agreement about the smoke sauna Korpela.

Travelling sauna was finally at the Finnish Embassy at the Independence Day. Before that during the Finfest e.g. President Niinistö and Mrs. Jenni Haukio were involved. See the enclosed picture.
Travelling sauna was a great success. ISA is happy that it was involved from the very beginning with this wood burning sauna . Also the North American Sauna Society was involved the whole year and participated to the different events during the travel of the sauna. NASS was also publishing some instructions how to take a sauna.

Celebrating a key part of Finnish culture, Southbank Centre brings a unique sauna experience to the heart of London for a limited time only (10 Nov – 30 Dec) as part of Southbank Centre’s Nordic Mattersand Wintertime. The only Finnish word to make it into everyday English is ‘sauna’ – at more than a thousand years old, and in a country where there are more saunas than cars, it is a huge part of Finnish culture. A new wave of public saunas is the hottest trend sweeping Finland, drawing Finns and tourists of all ages to unwind, meet with friends and family, and relax. Set within the picturesque roof garden of the Queen Elizabeth Hall, visitors to Southbank Centre’s rooftop sauna will be able to experience the true benefits of the Nordic way of life, overlooking London’s iconic river Thames.
Combining beautiful Nordic design with a bespoke artistic commission, the sauna is a collaboration with MA students from Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture, Department of Design:Pedro Pablo Garcia Alcazar, Markus Holste, Monica Romagnoli and Miki Sordi and Finnish sculptor Jaakko Pernu. Specially designed with translucent walls, the complex filters light through, brightening up dark winter nights.
Changing rooms and showering facilities are located on each side before entering the sauna. Inside the sauna, visitors can warm up and wind down with temperatures reaching 90 degrees celsius, then cool down in the open air, or with cold water buckets, whilst enjoying exclusive views over the Thames. The sauna sessions will be for sixteen people at a time, lasting seventy minutes, including a time to change. A sauna expert will be on hand to give you a little history to the sauna experience and demonstrateLöyly (meaning the steam that comes when you throw water on hot stones in a sauna).
For those who wish to have a post sauna drink, the Rooftop Bar, a cosy hideout with blankets and warming drinks and Nordic inspired snacks will be open.
Talks, debates and performances will also take place inside the sauna in the special Sauna Sundays sessions. The 15 minute sessions will run weekly from 26 November and include a performance by poetYomi Sode (26 Nov), the chance to try the sauna tradition of whisking with birch leaves (3 Dec), a talk about dance and choreography with Jean Abreau (10 Dec) and a look into the marvellous quirky characters of Nordic Folklore (17 Dec).
Women only sessions will be available every Monday & Tuesday: 2.30pm – 3.40pm and every Wednesday: 5.30pm – 6.40pm.
An up-close experience into Finnish culture, the Rooftop Sauna is an oasis for those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle this Winter.
